Gigaisland Security Bulletin - How worried should you be about the Internet Explorer vulnerability?

Over a week ago the Department of Homeland Security were urging Windows users to consider Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as their default web browser.  Should you stop using Internet Explorer?  Is this Internet Explorer flaw that serious? What browser would you recommend I use?  Now that the fix is out, is all well?  We can help you answer these questions so you're more empowered with securing your computer.
For many, many years we've been informing our Ohana to use other web browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer.  Why?  Because they are updated more frequently and is much better browsers in terms of features and functionality.  

Your business may use Internet Explorer because the company email or company website services only work with Internet Explorer.  That is perfectly fine to use Internet Explorer for those reasons.  But, what you can do is use another web browser to actually surf the internet.  

What did the flaw do?  The security flaw which was discovered by computer security company FireEye observed a cyber criminal group launching "spearfishing attacks" on some of their customers.  Someone within the targeted company would get an email with a link to the website the cyber criminals controlled.  Once the victim would click on the link while using Internet Explorer, their system would be compromised.  These attacks appear to be motivated by industrial espionage targeting intellectual property or corporate secrets.  The cyber criminals didn't seem interested in regular consumer data.    

Now that the code which was used to exploit Internet Explorer is known, it doesn't mean that another cyber criminal organization won't use the code as well.

But now that Microsoft released the fix which came out on May 1st 2014, you should be patched up against this threat.  The good news is Microsoft fixed the issue.  Just make sure that your Windows system is updated.  Our Ohana that subscribes to our maintenance service should be a ok. :-)

Thanks Laine for the bulletin. Very informative and helpful. I know when I tried to convert to Google Chrome a couple of years back, something I was using wasn't supported by that browser. Since we have maintenance support from you, I'm thinking we'll just stay with Internet Explorer for now. Mahalo, Karen

Thanks Laine. Always good to here from you. I recently shutdown IE and now use GChorme. Don't know which is better but sticking with Goog for now. Aloha to you and the family. Take care...Kenui, Sandi, Kainalu, Jami, Carli, Koa, and Ku'u

Aloha Kenui! It is great to hear from you. I hope that Google works for you and if not than there is always Firefox. Definitely keep on IE on your computer just in case a website you need to use works only with IE.
